May 21st, 2017 -

The Centre for Culture and the Arts at Leeds Beckett University, in partnership with Leeds West Indian Carnival, hosted an international conference on Caribbean Carnival Cultures in celebration of Leeds West Indian Carnival’s 50th anniversary.

Academics, costume designers, musicians, filmmakers and an evening of reggae and soca created an event not to be missed.

On Sunday morning conference participants joined our Leeds Black History Walk, exploring the city's heritage and connections to Africa and the Caribbean - contextualising the roots and spirit of West Indian Carnival in Britain.

Hidden historical narratives

were revealed as we were blessed by knowledgeable international delegates making invaluable contributions throughout the walk.
